Each coloured band represents the percentage of India’s area classified within a specific drought category during a given week (D0: Abnormally Dry through D4: Exceptional Drought). Seasonal drought expansion before the monsoon and recovery after the monsoon are visible each year, while wider dark-red bands indicate the most severe and widespread drought events.
